Breeding Champions
Coolawarra Comes of Age..21 years of harnessing cutting edge breeding technology merits show ring accolades.
Since 1987 Coolawarra has imported lineages of high impact genetics to ameliorate their herd selecting for SRS© traits and, culled with discipline, those negative traits alpacas with poor wools, or reproductive histories or weak conformation.
It has only been in the last 5 years though, since the advent of embryo transfer procedures, that the stud's hard years of selection has come to the fore, as they spread their top genetics into the herd by harvesting embryos from their donor or elite hembras. At the same time, culling poor quality animals out of their gene pool, as they become recipient dams only, has taken the level of follicle density and other attributes ahead in leaps and bounds.
Throughout their history, hand in hand with advanced breeding techniques, and with respect for Australian judges views, the stud has never shied away at competing for the front lines in any show ring, and learning by the experience, win or lose.
It has been an exciting journey. Since 1992 when Coolawarra won Grand Champion female at the inaugural alpaca exhibit at Sydney Royal, the stud has gone on to win Supreme, in 2001 with Coolawarra Queen of the Desert, unusually a female, and, at a time where Peruvian imports usually championed most showrings. Purrumbete Minderoo & Coolawarra Jaminu both also won Grand Champion titles in 1998 and 2000, at the Sydney Royal, the largest Agricultural Show in the Southern Hemisphere.
In recent years, adding Embryo transfer to their breeding toolbox, and applying it intensively, the multigeneral improvement of Coolawarra's hembra population has moved into such advanced levels that is rare to see Coolawarra progeny outside a front lineup. Further, Coolawarra females are sort for embryo transfer donor procedures, at their annual auction and via private sales, from some of the most respected breeders throughout Australia and internationally.
In the current Summer & Autumn Show circuit in NSW Coolawarra results stand testimony to the stud's focus on advancing the breed and depth of quality genetics in their herd.
